BASKETBALL REFEREES PRE-GAME CONFERENCE


INTRODUCTION:
  • The purpose of a good pre-game is to understand how officials can help each other
  • A good pre-game with your partners will reduce the risk of mishaps on the court
  • Crew Chief should run the pre-game
  • Use the Game Board when needed
GENERAL CONCEPTS (1):
  • Importance of the game
  • New rules and interpretations if any
  • Eye contact: on every dead ball situation; as much as possible
  • Substitutions
GENERAL CONCEPTS (2):
  • Violations
  • Hand checking
  • Off-ball coverage
  • Rough post play
  • Fights (expect unexpected)
GENERAL CONCEPTS (3):
  • COURT COVERAGE: areas of responsibility (work your primary but be aware what else is happening on the court); rotations; press and transition; fast breaks; rebounding; goaltending and basket interference; 3pts shot ...
GENERAL CONCEPTS (4):
  • FOULS: switches; double/triple calls; TF, UF, DF and multiple fouls; free throws; freeze while your partner reports to the table; avoid long distance calls; if the number of fouls is lop-sided, be ready to answer if you are asked about by the coach or player
GENERAL CONCEPTS (5):
  • COMMUNICATION WITH: partners, coaches, players, table officials, commisiner, spectators
GENERAL CONCEPTS (6):
  • TIME OUTS: find out regular or TV time out; talk about putting the ball back in play; observe the teams and table; talk about anything; restart on time
GENERAL CONCEPTS (7):
  • OFFICIAL WARNING: bench control - very important; delay of teh game; flopping 
  • PERSONAL WARNING: all mentioned above; shirts inside shorts
GENERAL CONCEPTS (8):
  • END OF PLAYING TIME: last possession signal; last shot responsibility; wave your hands immediately if you are sure 200% and not going to count it; don't make any signal if you are not sure
GENERAL CONCEPTS (9):
  • ON THE COURT: same outfit including whistles; meet table officials and coaches; forgot something?
  • AFTER THE GAME: shake your hands; leave the court together
